As our seasons become increasingly more extreme, heat stress is recognized as a serious hazard to worker’s safety. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), heat is the #1 weather related killer and our global temperatures are predicted to continue to rise in the coming years. Heat Stress can happen to anyone. In 2012, 4,120 workers became ill with a Heat Related Illness (HRI) and 31 workers died. Putting a prevention plan in place is vital to reducing risks and keeping workers safe. During our presentation we will review the definition of Heat Stress, contributing factors, HRIs resulting from Heat Stress, costs associated with not addressing Heat Stress in the workforce, and the key provisions and best practices used in prevention.

Do you know the important differences between Workers Compensation and OSHA’s recordable injuries? Recent changes make reporting / recording injuries an important task both for determining your insurance premium and meeting the new full reporting requirements of OSHA. During this session attendees will be given a simple plan which ensures that every injured worker is provided both the information and opportunity to obtain the best medical care for their injury. We will discuss medical treatment, introduce the tools that are available to every company who employs workers as well as reviewing a  simple approach to follow-up while the worker is recovering to ensure employee satisfaction.

On a daily basis we are exposed to many types of Noise from many sources. In this session you will learn the critical components of providing a defense against work related hearing loss. With over 20 years as a professional supervisor, Dr. Nelson uses his straight forward style to break down what records are critical for your agency’s defense against work related hearing loss. He will also identify what your supervisors should be requesting to equip them to make a “work-relatedness” determination.

Front-line supervisors are the strongest link to your workforce, unfortunately their priority message often carries the theme of production and safety takes a back seat, or worse - safety is viewed as an obstacle to production goals. After attending this session, you will have a clear idea of the supervisor’s role in your safety program. Supervisors are the key to leading, communicating and achieving your safety goals. They must be the strongest link in the chain! We will address pre-shift safety talks, training and safety meetings.

Over 240 individuals die each year from falling objects. When objects at heights is often an afterthought or not even a thought during safety at heights planning, workers pay the ultimate price. A dropped tool or poorly kept platform take on a new level of risk at height – endangering not only the worker at height but individuals below. Topics covered will include definitions of “Objects at Heights” including dropped objects, risks and costs associated with O@H, standards and regulations, the latest dropped objects statistics and an overview of best practice within the hierarchy of controls.

Finally we will explore Apps that can simplify your safety audits and inspections.

Are your workers protected when it comes to Fall Protection? Fall Protection topped the list of the most frequently violated OSHA standards for 2014. At #1, there were 7,900 inspections carried out, which resulted in 8,176 citations and a total of more than $20 million in fines collected. In this session we will review employee training requirements, an overview of the standard as well as the latest products and industry trends. We will have live demonstrations with our state of the art Fall Demonstration trailer.

We are all well aware of all the distractions drivers face today, but did you know that your company may be held liable for incidents caused by distracted employees while on the road? A well-structured safety policy for drivers allows all affected employees to know what the rules are and the consequences of not following them. After attending this session, you will be provided with the major points needed to address and implement a distracted driving policy.

A Lone Worker (LW) is an employee who performs an activity that is carried out in isolation from other workers without close or direct supervision. Included are those who work outside normal business hours or traditional facilities, plant maintenance and more. When an injury or a health related illness occurs, a delay in emergency response or medical assistance can be devastating. Employers have a duty to assess risks to lone workers and take steps to avoid or control risks. This session focuses on current OSHA 29 CFR 1926.800 and offers a “Common Sense” approach to keep your employee safe.

Every day nearly 2,000 people are injured while using a ladder, and as many as 100 of them will suffer a long-term disability. Today, one person will die in a ladder-related accident. Fall-related accidents while on a worksite account for one of the largest expenses to organizations. Reducing the number of ladder-related injuries is becoming top priority for the nation’s foremost companies, and Dave Francis, National Safety Director at Little Giant Ladders, is leading the charge. Upon completing this workshop, the participant should be able to: 1. Recognize ways to reduce the three most common kinds of ladder-related accidents and injuries. 2. Identify recent advancements in climbing equipment that will reduce risks on the job. 3. Improve workplace safety training by utilizing free live and online resources. 4. Demonstrate teaching techniques that will improve safety training among coworkers.

This technical seminar on Construction hazards focuses on Noise and Silica, providing information about topics including a construction industry overview and regulations in construction. Assessment of noise, which is a major hazard, will be discussed, along with the effective use, fit testing, training and health promotion modelling of hearing protection devices. The health effects and sources of silica, another major hazard, will also be discussed, including the OSHA Special Emphasis Program (SEP) and National Emphasis Program (NEP), and engineering controls.

Slips trips and falls constitute a large majority of injuries and accidents in General Industry. This one hour session looks at the major causes, prevention and potential solutions. Housekeeping, weather conditions and footwear all impact this safety issue.
