As we approach mid-summer and the sun shines bright, there is no better time to highlight July as UV Safety awareness month. The sun emits radiation known as UV-A and UV-B rays, which are both harmful to your eyes and skin. Some of those damaging effects could include vision problems or damage to the eyes, skin cancer, premature aging of the skin, and a suppressed immune system.


As our body's largest organ, it is important that we protect our skin from sun exposure. Below are a few ways to minimize the risk when it comes to sun exposure:

 • Cover up- wear long sleeve clothing, pants, sun glasses, a wide brimmed hat, or clothing with UV protective material
 • Stay shaded- the sun is most intense between 10am and 4pm. It is best to stay in the shade during those hours. And remember, the sun can still cause damage on cloudy or winter days!
 • Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if sweating or swimming

It's important to remember that sun damage doesn't just happen outdoors! Going to a tanning salon or welding can also cause harm to your skin. Remember to always stay covered and protected from the sun, and check for changes in marks and moles on your skin.
